Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a “partner parish?”
“Partner parishes” are two churches that maintain their own buildings, budgets, vestries, programs and activities…but share clergy. The partner parish arrangement allows each church to keep its own identity while sharing the cost of a full-time salaried priest.

What is a family-sized church?
Technically, family-sized churches are those with 50 or fewer families on the parish rolls. Our two churches meet this qualification, but we prefer to think that ‘family-sized’ also indicates an intimacy and warmth in worship and fellowship that we experience.

Which clergy person is at which church on which Sunday?
The Rev. Audrey Scanlan, rector, attends both churches each Sunday. The priest associate and deacon alternate between parishes. All three clergy participate in the "preaching rota" which means they take turns giving the sermon.

What is a rector...priest associate...deacon?
The rector is the head priest and administrator of the Partner Parishes. The priest associate is retired from full-time ministry but serves on Sundays and preaches each week in one of the two parishes. He also leads the Tuesday Bible Study.  The deacon is a "servant minister" who is ordained with a specific call to strengthen outreach ministry. She also works full-time in the secular world.

What is the style of worship at each parish?
We generally use the Rite II (modern language) order of service from the Book of Common Prayer. In some seasons we include chanting in our services. We worship in a relaxed but dignified style. We sing from The Hymnal 1982 and occasionally from Lift Every Voice and Sing and Wonder, Love and Praise. Children are welcome in our pews and we value them as an important part of our parish family.

What is "Rhythms of Grace"?
On the third Sunday of the month at 1 pm, we offer a worship service designed for special needs children and their families. Church of Our Saviour is one of several churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut to sponsor the Rhythms of Grace program.  See www.rhythms-of-grace.org for more information.

What if I am not an Episcopalian?
Get in line.
Many of our parishioners come to us from different faith traditions and find a home in the Episcopal Church. We are a welcoming and inclusive faith tradition. We celebrate communion every week and welcome all baptized members of the Christian faith to receive the sacrament. All are welcome at the table. The rector welcomes a chance to discuss your particular needs with you.
